From 13 to 17 March 2023 a five-day train-the-trainer workshop on “Implementing Gender Equality and Diversity in Customs”, which took place at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels (Belgium), was held for the first time by the WCO with the financial support by the United Kingdom through Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Accelerate Trade Facilitation Programme and the SIDA-WCO Trade Facilitation and Customs Modernization Programme for Sustainable Development in sub-Sahara Africa. According to the results of the first selection stage based on WCO Recognized Expert in Gender Equality and Diversity Profile 20 participants were selected from Greece, Canada, Botswana, Kosovo, Mauritius, the Republic of Moldova, Peru, the Regional Office for Capacity Building for the Asia-Pacific Region, the Regional Office for South East Africa Region Capacity Building, West and Central Africa Regional Office for Capacity Building, Thailand, United Kingdom, Botswana, Cambodia and Ukraine. Today, there are 185 WCO member countries. WCO Director of the Capacity Building Directorate Mr. Taeil Kang, at whose invitation a member of the Working Group on Gender Policy Implementation in the State Customs Service of Ukraine, a member of the WCO Virtual Working Group on Gender Equality and Diversity, a representative of the Department for Specialized Training and Canine Services participated in the above-mentioned event, in his welcome speech emphasized the urgent need not only to obtain extremely important information from WCO experts on gender issues, but also to exchange invaluable experience with other countries. The purpose of this workshop was not only to build on the suite of initiatives and tools that the WCO has developed in the area of gender equality and diversity, by developing the participants’ skills to further strengthen the capacities of customs fdministrations to embed and sustain gender equality and inclusion in their daily policies and practices. This practical training made it possible to better understand the main concepts of gender equality and diversity, provided an opportunity to present to the general public the work of the State Customs Service on gender issues and gained valuable experience in the implementation of advanced gender initiatives.
