ACQUAINTANCE WITH NEW APPROACHES IN DETECTING WEAPONS SMUGGLING

On September 21, 2021 officials of the Department for Specialized Training and Canine Services of the State Customs Service of Ukraine took part in the virtual seminar “Identification of military goods at the border”, which was held by the World Customs Organization.

WCO experts, representatives of the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) of Germany and the UK Border Force (UKBF) presented international experience in combating the illegal movement of weapons between countries.

In particular, the following topics were discussed:

methods of identification of military markings and classification systems;

characteristics of goods that may be of a military nature;

violations related to the licensing procedure for international shipments of dual-use and military goods;

global threats of illegal weapons proliferation due to military conflicts (Afghanistan, Libya, etc.);

current challenges and risk indicators inherent in the illegal movement of weapons.

The presented international experience during the seminar will be implemented in the special training process of State Customs Service officials to improve their skills in the development and implementation of control measures to prevent weapons smuggling in the future.
