Weekdays of canine experts of the State Customs Service in Spain: service dogs Rita and Sina’s first steps in search work

Very few people know, of course, apart from women/men dog handlers, what is behind the training of service dogs. The way to accustom dogs to search work for the detection of one or the other object/substance is difficult and time-consuming.

Currently, the canine trainers-dog handlers, representatives of the Department for Specialized Training and Canine Services of the State Customs Service, with their new partners Rita and Sina, are at the initial stage of getting used to performing different training commands in a game form. Therefore, newly formed canine teams spend a lot of time, which is the best occasion to bring together and establish a working relationship.

During the stay in Spain, the training participants were able to:

– get acquainted with the organization of canine services of the Civil Guard of the Kingdom of Spain, training infrastructure and construction of the training process of the  Guardia Civil’s Dog Training Centre of the Kingdom of Spain (El Pardo);

– undergo training on the rules of safe handling of service dogs, detection of signs of dog diseases and prevention of stressful situations for them, etc.;

– learn more about how to use a clicker, train service dogs to it, as well as the kong, the most popular retrieval object according to the methodology of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
